My Favourite Morning Cleansers

Cleansing is such an important step in a skincare routine. Choosing a right cleanser not only clears the skin of dirt and grime but also lays the foundation for further layering of products for optimum effectiveness. Like any skincare junkie my cabinets are overflowing with cleansers. In my mind I justify myself with so many cleansers by categorization – I have hydrating cleanser for days when I feel my skin is dry, exfoliating when it feels congested and cleansers cum mask when I don’t know what it feels 😏😏 But in honesty, I try cleansers because they give me the feel of the brand. Cleansers are very hard to mess with and if I don’t like a cleanser it is very less likely that I’ll try another product from the brand. But that’s me !

After trialing bazillion cleansers , I have narrowed down to these cleansers which I use most frequently in the mornings. These cleansers not only keeps my skin balanced but also are effective for all skin types. If you are diligent about your night routines than all you need is something gentle and nourishing for your skin in your morning routine.

My skin Type: Combination / oily which is easily congested and occasionally dehydrated with occasional hormonal acne.

1. In Fiore Treate Cleansing Emulsion

It’s a high end luxury natural skin care line based in San Fransisco. Everything from its product to packaging screams luxury.  It’s my top favorite morning cleanser.

Consistency – Creamy

Fragrance – Jasmine / floral – no artificial fragrance added.

Packaging: It comes in a beautiful red color glass bottle with a pump and lock mechanism. It instantly upgrades the look of your bathroom shelves. It also comes in a travel friendly 30 ml size.

Claims:A gentle cleansing emulsion essential for impurity-free skin. The decadent floral milk is made with soothing Aloe Vera, Rose Water and nine herbal infusions with the subtlest hint of Jasmine Blossoms. Biocompatible Echinacea, Dandelion and Burdock Root gently and effectively detoxify all traces of impurities.

  • Safeguards the skin’s natural pH balance
  • Cleanses thoroughly, rinses completely without stripping skin
  • Rose Water calms post-procedural, sensitive, rosacea, windburned skins

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Rosa Damascena Flower Hydrosol, Organic Sugar Cane Alcohol**, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Oil, Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Oil, Glycerin, Xanthan Gum, Jasminum Officinale Flower Extract, Rosa Canina Fruit Extract, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Arctium Lappa (Burdock) Root Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Flower Extract, Echinacea Angustifolia Root Extract, Plantago Major (Plantain) Leaf Extract, Taraxacum Officinale (Dandelion) Leaf/Root Extract, Fucus Vesiculosus Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Aroma*, Limonene*, Linalool*, Geraniol*, Eugenol*, Benzyl Benzoate*, Citronellol*, Farnesol*.

My experience : It’s a very gentle creamy cleanser which works effectively and washes all dirt and grime and even your makeup effectively. With a price tag of 70$, In Fiore products doesn’t come cheap but for me they are in top three brand amid  vast array of natural / green brands. In Fiore products are effective and do what they claim. It has a very pleasing and uplifting natural floral ( ? touch jasmine) smell which is something I look forward to in the morning or night and it immediately calms my nerves. I find this cleanser very soothing for my skin considering its aloe base which my skin loves. It emulsifies easily with water and washes off clean without the need of any washcloth. Post wash my skin feels clean, soft  and nourished without any residue. It’s supposed to be used in a 4-2-4 cleansing method (pic below) with its illuminating cleansing oil. I tried that when I first received the duo in my beauty heroes box last year and I dare say that though it looks tedious , your skin will glow and thank you for it. I didn’t repurchase the illuminating oil since I realized it works fine with my other oil cleansers. But when you use the duo of illuminating oil and treate emulsion it truly gives you the spa like glow and freshness to your skin.  I feel it detoxifies my skin without any undue irritation but if you have very sensitive skin it’s good to be aware of the fact that it contains essential oil which may cause sensitivity for some. I find all the claims with this product to be true. This is my second bottle of this cleanser which is hitting the bottom 😡 and I’ll definitely repurchase it and recommend to everyone.

Price : 70$ for 125 ml and 28$ for 30 ml.

2. Blissoma Mild Rice Facial cleanser

This organic cleanser is based on whole brown rice flour which along with natural salicylic acid from the willow bark provides gentle exfoliation. The other key ingredients in this are the emollient organic oils of Apricot Kernal, Hemp, and Sunflower mixed with infusions of organic Chickweed and Rose tone and freshen circulation to flush away toxins.

Ingredients :

Infusion of Althea officinalis* (marshmallow), Stellaria media* (chickweed), Plantago major* (plantain), Rosa damascena*, Arthemis nobilis* (chamomile), Glycerin*, Helianthus annuus (sunflower) Oil*, Oryza sativa* (brown rice), Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Cocos nucifera (coconut) Oil*, Prunus armeniaca (apricot) kernal Oil*, Glyceryl Stearate, Salix alba* (willowbark) extract, Cannabis sativa (hemp) Oil*, Cetearyl Alcohol, Gluconolactone, Echinacea purpurea Extract*, Populus tremuloides (aspen) bark extract, Essential Oils of Lavandula angustifolia, Litsea Cubeba, Cymbopogon martini (palmarosa), Canarium luzonicum (elemi), Boswellia carterii (frankincense), Vetiveria zizandoides (vetiver), Xanthan Gum, Rosemary Oleoresin Extract, Grain Alcohol*+
essential oils in this product contain: linalool**, geraniol**, limonene**, citral**
*from Certified Organic Agriculture
**natural components of essential oils

Packaging : It comes in a tin container with a lock mechanism which is very travel friendly as there are no chances of leak and breakage.

Consistency : cream gel ?

Fragrance : The the description on the site says citrus and I find the vetiver smell to be the strongest in it. It’s not offensive in anyway but if you are sensitive to that than it’s good to know.

My Experience : It’s a very mild exfoliating cleanser due to the grainy texture of the rice flour but it’s not abrasive at all. It’s a great morning cleanser but I’ll not suggest it to use for makeup removal. It will be suitable for all skin types. I work it up on dry skin but you can use it on a wet skin, it lathers very mildly and washes off easily. I find that it leaves a very thin residue feeling which goes away if you let your skin dry. Though I hate any residue on my skin but this never bothered me. You can use this as a mask too which I have done number of times and wash it off in the shower. Post wash my skin feels moisturized and soft. I feel it works great for my skin when it’s sensitive and irritated and it immediately calms it down. It also helps to even out my skin tone and also helps in reducing the breakouts. It’s a great cleanser if you are looking for completely natural and affordable cleanser which is also effective for all skin types.

Price : 31.99$ for 4 oz.

3. Kate Somerville Goat milk moisturizing cleanser

This sephora exclusive cleanser is a new addition to the kate somerville goat milk range.

Packaging: It comes in a tube packaging which is not only pleasant to look at but also easy to fit into your travel and gym bag.

Consistency : Gel which immediately melts to an oil.

Fragrance : Vanilla

Ingredients: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Lauryl Glucoside, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Water, Moringa Oil/Hydrogenated Moringa Oil Esters, Manuka (Leptospermum) Honey Extract, Goat Milk Powder, Lactose, Milk Protein, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Bisabolol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Fragrance, Lactic Acid, Citric Acid.

My experience : Though its touted as an innovative formula but there is nothing innovative as far as the consistency and texture goes. You can find many similar gel-oil-milk formula in the market. The advantage is good ingredients , reasonable price range and chic packaging. As mentioned earlier it comes out as gel and when you start working it up in the skin , it easily melts and turns into an oil which further turns into milk on addition of water. There is no tugging or pulling of skin. It doesn’t sting eyes and removes makeup effectively when used in the night. That’s why if you are a minimalist and want to use just one cleanser which can do everything than this can be the one. It gives you the cushion of a balm cleanser and comfort of an oil cleanser which washes off easily with water. Post was skin feels soft and hydrated with no residue. Great for oily skin as there is no shea butter or beeswax. Doesn’t break me out. The only con for me is the sweet vanilla fragrance which I don’t like and I don’t find it necessary. But overall it’s a good cleanser which I recommend for all skin type.

Price: 34$ for 4 oz.

4. Kate Somerville Exfoliate Cleanser

This is a new sulfate free daily foaming cleanser is suitable for all skin types.

Ingredients: Water/Aqua/Eau, Stearic Acid, Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate, Lauramidopropyl Betaine, Glycerin, Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Cetearyl Phosphate, Xylitylglucoside, Dimethicone PEG-8 Meadowfoamate, Anhydroxylitol, Xylitol, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Bromelain, Papain, Lactobacillus/Pumpkin Fruit Ferment Filtrate, Lauramide DIPA, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder, Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Aniba Rosaeodora (Rosewood) Wood Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Geranium Maculatum Oil, Benzyl Alcohol, Sodium Hydroxide, Chlorphenesin, Chlorophyllin-Copper Complex (CI 75810), Maltodextrin

Consistency : Granular gel (not plastic beads)

Fragrance: citrus

My experience: I was initially vary of using this cleanser because the more popular exfoliate cleanser of this brand was too drying for me. But it’s hard to resist the temptation whenever Kate Somerville comes out with something.😜

It’s a sulfate free formula and uses coconut derived surfactant – Sodium cocoyl glycinate and Lauramidopropyl betaine as the cleansing agent and foam booster and has a EWG rating of 1 for those who gives importance of this database. It comes out as a granular gel and you only need the tiniest amount. When worked on a wet skin it foams up nicely . It has a citrus smell which is not overpowering as the vanilla smell in the goat milk cleanser. It rinses easily with water and post wash skin feels clean, bright and clear. It’s a very good cleanser for acne prone/ normal to oily skin and for those who lives in hot and humid environment. I particularly use this when my skin feels congested. The key ingredients in it are –

  • GLYCOLIC ACID and LACTIC ACID refines the appearance of pores and helps clear buildup on skin’s surface
  • PINEAPPLE, PUMPKIN and PAPAYA ENZYMES gently exfoliate without over-drying, leaving skin feeling soft and moisturized

I never felt it over-drying as long as I’m using the smallest amount. Don’t be overzealous with it. It’s a great cleanser as a second cleanse and for post workout session as it gives me the feeling of a clean skin without any dryness. I think it will be a great gentle exfoliating cleanser in addition to all the balm/ oil cleanser you might have in your bathroom shelves. I recommend it for all skin type but dry to very dry skin may find it drying.

Price : 38$ for 4 oz.

5.Tatcha pure one step camellia cleansing oil

Though I like creamy cleansers in the morning , I appreciate how light Tatcha camellia feels on the skin and washes off easily without any need of washcloth. My love for this cleanser is unbound and I have already talked about it at a great length here.

6. Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser

This is a new addition in my cleanser collection. I have been using this since the end of March  on and off but mostly in the mornings.

Ingredients: Water/Aqua/Eau, Rosa Damascena Flower Water, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Propanediol, Isohexadecane, Poloxamer 184, Acrylamide/Sodium Acryloyldimethyltaurate Copolymer, Xylitylglucoside, Betaine, Allantoin, Glycerin, Panthenol, Symphytum Officinale Root Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Anhydroxylitol, Polysorbate 80, Xylitol, Ammonium Polyacryloyldimethyl Taurate, Isopropyl Myristate, Benzoic Acid, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Hydroxide

Claims: This is the ultimate daily face wash: use on dry skin to dissolve away makeup and grime, or on wet skin as you start your day. The pH-balanced, creamy gel formula is made with a blend of five skin conditioners so your face is left feeling healthy and soft, never tight. Its cleansing power comes from the same gentle cleaning agents you’d find in contact lens solution, so it’s tough on impurities and still safe to use on your eyes.

Packaging: in a cute sturdy plastic bottle with a pump and lock mechanism, safe for travel.

Texture : Creamy gel.

Fragrance: very light pleasant Rose

My experience : Whenever I read claims like “one face wash to rule them all” and ” face oil to end all oils” I roll my eyes😵😱 I don’t know what to think  of such claims. You can have a same skin type but still every skin behaves differently under any given condition. Nevertheless keeping aside its tall claims it’s a good effective cleanser and given its price point a very affordable cleanser.

I like it as a morning cleanser or second cleanser in the night. I initially thought its going to be gel to oil cleanser but it comes out as a gel and stays as a creamy gel( as in the picture above) till you wash it off with water. It doesn’t foam at all. It has a very pleasant rose smell which lingers fr a while but is definitely not cloying.  It’s very easy to spread and doesn’t tug or pull on skin. It’s easy on eyes and there is no stinging which is true to its claims as it uses poloxamer which is used in a contact lens cleanser. It removes makeup easily but for waterproof eye makeup you may need to use it twice. You can use it on both dry and wet skin without much difference though I prefer to use it on a damp skin. I find it soothing when my skin is irritated and doesn’t like any drama. I can attribute to the use of comfrey , rosewater and vitamn b5 along with sodium hyaluronate. It’s great for acne prone skin. It leaves skin feeling clean and soft without any residue.  For pH testers , you will love to know that it’s pH balanced.  Though it’s not completely green but there is nothing in this cleanser to put me off and due to its affordability and effectiveness I can’t recommend it enough.

Price : 18$ for 6 fl oz / 177 ml.

These are my current favorite morning cleansers which I rotate in my daily routine. What’s yours?

  1. I loved this article great content and honesty, I would love to try tacha & Kate Summerville for obvious reasons! Everyone on IG raves about them but they r not readily available here,
What am I saying I want to try them all ☺️ If I am to be honest

    1. Thanks so much Esnath for reading and stopping by. I’m so disloyal to brands when it comes to cleansers , I actually believe (dream 😆) in my head to try all the cleansers. They give you such an instant gratification:) I really wish that they make Kate Somerville availiable soon in UK but you can always order it from sephora during their sale. They ship fast and will save you on shipping!! I see Oskia and Rodial constantly on your feed and they are on wishlist too. Looking forward to try them !

Molly what a great post! Very thorough and detailed, yet easy to follow along and informative. I’ve added a few of these cleansers to my list, as your recommendations are always on point. You know my thoughts on the Goat Milk cleanser (love it and also reviewed it on my blog, thank you by the way for reading my post and commenting 🙂 ). I’ve also tried the Exfoliating cleanser by KS and as you also mention, it is less drying than her other face scrub, so I do really like it as well. I also picked up the Tatcha one, but I have yet to try it. Great review as always!

    1. Thank you so much Cat for taking out time to read my post and I’m glad that you enjoyed it. Yes, we do share a mutual love for that goat milk cleanser. Do try the tatcha soon I’m sure you’ll love that. It’s very light but effective for its job. I always enjoy your post and gorgeous pics. I appreciate your support and sweet words.

      Thanks again !

These are great reviews Molly! I love how detailed you are. Most of these brands are not available in Europe, which is a shame because Id love to try both the Tatcha Camelia Cleansing Oil and the Goat Milk cleanser from KateS. I actually just read the review Cat made on it 🙂
I like creamy cleansers as well, though my skin is on the dry side, unlike yours. In the past I’ve really liked Oskia Renaissance cleansing gel and it’s an item I’d repurchase, if I wasn’t obsessed with trying new products…and I’m a great fan of cleansers, in particular. I’ve also really liked cheaper cleansers like Liz Earle’s Cleanse and Polish and the Ultimelt from SoapandGlory. I’m now using a milk cleanser from L’oreal (very very affordable one) which is not bad at all, though you can’t compare to the ones mentioned in your post. Next month I want to splurge on a good cleanser, but I still don’t know what I will get.
Glossier is a brand I’ve just discovered, cause I hadn’t heard of it until little time ago…seems like a very good product and the fact that is affordable makes it even more intriguing. I also really like the texture, from what I can see on your pictures it seems sooo light, like a jelly.
If only I could find it here in Europe 😦 or maybe I can, I should definitely check this out.

Have a good day Molly! xx

    1. Thanks so much Silvia for always taking time to read my reviews and commenting. I appreciate it so much. I love your blog too and after reading your post on Oskia , it’s on top of my wishlist. I have heard a lot about Liz earle and I saw it here and there but since I know now that you use it I’ll defininitely look it up.
That is such a bummer that Tatcha and KS is not availiable outside US but you can always order them through the sephora US site during sale , you’ll save on shipping or when KS is having a sale. I think you’ll enjoy the glossier cleanser , its totally non drying and keeps skin soft. I didn’t think much of it but slowly it grew on me and I have been using it a lot. It’s super affordable and no nonsense cleanser. I’m afraid they haven’t started shipping outside US and it’s availaible through their site though they are planning for international shipping I guess. Do check it out and if you want 20% off coupon do let me know , you can save on shipping. The whole week was seriously crazy for me. Looking forward to catch up with your blog this weekend.

      Have a wonderful weekend !!

So I hope you had a good weekend Molly! It’s a pleasure to read your blog, though I wish you were European and verything you show was available here. We’ll see how Glossier will grow, because it definitely will. I read that most of their products are curretly out of stock because they didn’t expect so much demand. I wonder if you know a brand called Jan marini? They have Bioglycolic cleanser that Alex steinherr (glamour uk beauty editor) recommended on her instagram. xx

  5. paritashah26 says:

Infiore cleanser and KS Goat milk cleansers are now in my wishlist! I also want to try the blissoma one due to the fact its exfoliating cleanser and its gentle!a

    1. Hey there …It’s fun catching up with you here. You definitely need to try these cleanser especially the infiore , it’s not cheap for a cleanser though so I’ll suggest you go for the travel size first. I think since we both have oily skin , KS cleanser can help a lot there for clogged pores but I don’t use it daily or else I have seen it can be drying . Its best to rotate it or use it as a second cleanse after using balm cleanser. Do let me your thoughts once you have got them.
      Have a great weekend!!

Just discovered your blog & have been sucking up every word-thank you! My skin is exactly like yours & I’m wondering if you’ve tried Yuli Halcyon cleanser? It’s raved as a holy grail cleanser in the green beauty world, but is also on the pricey side….wondering what your thoughts on it are as I’m interested to splurge on it! Thanks!

    1. Hi Alyssa,
Thank you so much for reading my blog and taking time to comment. I really appreciate it.
Regarding Halcyon cleanser I haven’t tried it yet, probably because I tried their liquid courage which I didn’t like much?! I know it has its own fan following and if I look at it’s ingredients then it looks good, may be in future I will give in and buy it but for now I can’t help you much in it. Sorry.
      Molly xoxo

  7. Anastasia says:

    hi molly,
does the kate somerville goat milk cleanser good for second cleanser?
because i always remove my makeup or sunscreen with cleansing oil first.
i’m running out my sunday riley ceramic slip cleanser, and i need more hydrating cleanser.. my skin is combination, lately i found that sunday riley ceramic slip feels too dry on my skin, esp at night.

btw i’m loving your blog and been following you at ig too 🙂

    1. Hi Anastasia,
Thanks for such sweet and king words. I’m so so glad that you enjoyed my blog.
Kate Sommerville is a great cleanser and can be used both as a first and second cleanser, it removes makeup and leaves skin hydrated and soft. I love that it emulsifies easily and can be removed with water. I also find the Shangpree S- energy cleansing gel very similar. You can check it out in my recent post on travel edt.
Both are excellent but I prefer Shangpree since I don’t like the added vanilla scent in the kate sommerville cleanser.
      Thanks for stopping by,
      Molly xoxo
