In my search for the natural and sulfate free hair products , I came across the brand “Briogeo” – a family owned business who uses the time honored traditional recipes of natural hair care. The word ‘Brio‘ means full of life and ‘Geo’ means earth. What a beautiful way of summing a brand !
The use of sulfates in shampoo is a controversial topic , some are okay with it while some including me are ready to make a switch. If the product is as effective as any commercial hair care product out there than why not? I don’t understand that the need to continue using products with fillers, synthetic fragrances , parabens and sulfates that can cause skin related issues such as skin irritation, dryness, redness, itchiness, and in some instances, hair loss due to follicle inflammation. In addition, sulfates can strip hair of their natural oils and leave them prone to dryness, dullness, and breakage.
I get the temptation , the availability and the price issues. I also understand the process of switching to natural brands is slow and I believe that everyone should do it at their own pace not because it’s “the” trend. But if you are ready for the change than Briogeo is a great company to start with which doesn’t compromise on the effectiveness. The another good thing about this brand is that it offers a great range of products to cater every hair type from fine to curly to oily which is not very common with natural brands.
My hair type: Fine hair / oily scalp with dry ends/ straight with chief concerns about hair thinning and hair fall.
Blossom & Bloom™ Ginseng + Biotin Volumizing Shampoo & Conditioner
This shampoo is enriched with ginseng , biotin , vitamin B5 and ginger root. It also contains Maltodextrin (a natural sugar starch) which thickens the strands. It’s great for my fine hair and oily scalp and is a perfect shampoo to give your hair a spring time boost for extra volume . It has a fresh fragrance and comes out as a clear gel. It lathers well which is my biggest problem with other natural shampoo. I want that feel of the lather doing its job.
I use it on my wet hair and massage it for a minute to slowly build the lather. The Ginseng and the Ginger root in it stimulate the blood flow and promote hair growth. The biotin is a known ingredient to maintain the overall health of the hair from roots to shaft. It makes hair stronger and prevents the hair fall. The maltodextrin helps to enhance the appearance of fuller hair without any sticky or stiff after effects. The shampoo effectively clears the scalp of any build up without stripping or over drying which happens with lot of other volumizing shampoo.
The Blossom and biotin volumizing conditioner beautifully complements the shampoo with added benefits of shine boosting effects of rosehip, argan and almond oil. Though initially I thought that the shampoo is good enough for my hair as using heavy conditioner weighs down my fine hair. But after the usage of the conditioner, I feel that it makes my hair very soft and helps them to detangle easily with less hair fall. They never feel weighed down. The combo of the shampoo and conditioner keeps my hair healthy and shiny and free from any build up.
Price : Shampoo 22$ and conditioner 23$ for 8.5 fl.oz.
Will I repurchase ? yes
Recommended for : Oily , fine flat hair but it will work for all hair types.
Be Gentle, Be Kind Avocado + Quinoa Co-Wash
This cream co-wash is a 4-in-1 formula that effectively cleanses, conditions, detangles, and nourishes your hair. This ultra-hydrating formula removes impurities without stripping hair of natural oils. Fortified with hydrating shea, nourishing avocado oil & quinoa extracts, and soothing aloe to enhance manageability and healthiness of the hair.
I started to use this shampoo because I love to wash my hair daily. If you workout daily and have an oily scalp than you can understand my misery. It doesn’t matter that what shampoo I use in the morning, my hair becomes limp and flat with all the sweat and grime. I’m not comfortable with the use of dry shampoo on a daily basis. Though there are many natural dry shampoo in the market, they don’t work well for my hair type. So the next good alternative for me is using a co wash which cleanses and conditions at the same time. It also saves me a lot of time.
The consistency of this is like of a conditioner but it lathers and cleanses well which is such a non existent thing in the other natural shampoos I have tried. I massage it for a minute or so and leave it while I scrub and clean my body and then just wash it off. During the winters, the avocado oil and soothing aloe worked wonderfully for my hair which gets dry at the ends. It didn’t necessarily gave me the volume I want but it didn’t weigh them down either. It kept my hair smooth and hydrated. Now with weather getting warm and the humidity up I can see myself using it less than usual. It will work great for you if you have normal to dry hair or damaged hair. There is no residue build up while using it , though twice a week I rotate it with my volumizing shampoo and this combination has made my hair look lot more shinier and scalp healthier. The only problem I have with this shampoo is its packaging. It’s a thick cream consistency and you really need to squeeze the bottle to take the shampoo out which is a struggle in shower. I prefer pump packaging.
Price : 20$ fr 8.5fl.oz.
Will I repurchase ? Yes but may be in winters. In summers it might be heavy for my oily hair. I do hope by then they will improve on packaging.
Recommended for : normal to dry , treated and damaged hair , sensitive scalp.
Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask
It’s an intensely nourishing hair mask which I use once a week to keep my hair in optimal health. It has a whipped body butter consistency. The key ingredients in this mask are –
Argan Oil: Repairs, conditions and reduces frizz
Panthenol (vitamin B5): Repairing essential hair vitamin
Avocado Oil: Conditions and enhances shine
Biotin: Essential vitamin that promotes hair growth and strengthens hair
Sweet Almond Oil: Nourishes and hydrates hair; increases shine
Rosehip Fruit Oil: Diminishes frizz and moisturizes hair and scalp
Vitamin A: Essential hair vitamin that replenishes and supports healthy hair growth
Keratin: Enhances hair elasticity and strength
It’s supposed to be used after the shampoo and should be kept it the hair for few minutes before washing it off. This is one way of doing it but if you have fine hair and oily scalp like me than I use it as a hair mask before I shampoo. I spritz my hair with some water and massage this mask on my scalp and cover it with the shower cap while putting on my face mask or sheet mask on weekend. After an hour or so I jump in the shower and go with my regular shampoo routine and it gives me volume without weighing it down and my hair looks and feels incredibly soft and light. With the summers coming and with my habit of daily washing my hair this routine works best for me . I can use it on alternate days too without making my hair feel heavy or any build up. If you have oily scalp like me then try this method of using the hair mask or just the conditioner before using your shampoo, you’ll see the change.
Price : 26 $ for 5.25fl.oz.
Will I repurchase :Yes
Recommended for: All hair types
Tips for fine hair / oily scalp : If you have ;hair like me than in the last few months I have realized that using a conditioner or a hair mask before the shampoo works better for me rather than afterwards. It’s like a double cleansing method where you might use a oil/cream cleanser before a second cleanse. Use oil massages once a week in addition to the above method. It has definitely helped me in regulating the balance of my hair , try it may be it can help you!
