Maya Chia : The Super Couple Face Oil

IMG_20160215_114822

I embarked on the journey of facial oil since last year and I have been hooked since then.  I tried many oils but during this journey of many hits and misses , I have realized that the magic not only lies in the ingredients rather its lies in the hands of the formulator. I have tried many luxury brands with exotic sounding ingredients which didn’t work for my skin and sometimes simple oil with two basic ingredient has worked wonders.

The story behind Maya Chia oil is different. It wasn’t any impulse purchase nor it was enabled by any rave review. Rather it was a gift by my husband who decided that gifting me a facial oil on my birthday is the safest bet by looking at my overflowing shelves. Nevertheless I’m impressed by his research.

Maya Chia

This new green beauty line is founded by Susanne Norwitz, who started her career as a speechwriter for Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani of NYC. From there she roamed the galleries of Harvard University earning her master’s degree and also worked with the big corporate companies like Walgreens,  Revlon and  Kellogg. She found her true passion when she came across the nutritional powerhouse ” Chia” which has been a staple of the Maya People for many years and soon Maya Chia came into existence.

The Super Couple Face Oil

The Super couple face oil is a multi correctional face oil which harness the power of Chia oil and Astaxanthin which are known powerful antioxidants and hence the name.

Key Ingredients :

  • Chia oil – The superfood chia seeds contains  8x the omegas as wild-caught salmon, 7x the vitamin c of oranges, and 3x the antioxidants as blueberries
  • Astaxanthin – is derived from the microalgae plant, and is clinically proven to be 65x stronger than Vitamin C in combating free radicals. It gives the beautiful pink coral hue to the oil.

Complete Ingredients list –

Supercritical Chia (Salvia hispanica) Seed Oil, Haematococcus Pluvialis Algal (Astaxanthin) Extract, Jasminum Grandiflorum (Jasmine) Absolute, Rosa Damascena (Bulgarian Rose) Absolute, Santalum Spicatum (Australian Sandalwood), Aniba Roseodora (Rosewood) Essential Oil, Daucus Carota (Carrot) Seed Essential Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Essential Oil, Cistus Ladaniferus (Cistus) Essential Oil, Boswelia Carterii (Frankincense) Essential Oil, Myrrha Commiphora (Myrrh) Essential Oil, Anthemis Nobilis (Roman Chamomile) Flower Essential Oil, Chamomilla Recutita (German Chamomile) Essential OIl

Packaging It comes in a sturdy glass bottle with dropper . The cap screws tight and the bottle is travel friendly. But I like the pump mechanism as I always fear that one day I’ll drop the bottle and break it. But that’s my personal preference.

Consistency – It’s a very light weight oil almost like a serum and absorbs quickly and completely.

Fragrance– It has a natural floral fragrance which dissipates quickly.

My Experience

The first thing that drew my attention to this oil was the usage of chia oil as a base ingredient. How many oils in the market can claim that ? There is no inclusion of any grapeseed oil , jojoba oil which are good on their own but do not justify the cost to me. Maya Chia contains the  non-gmo supercritical chia oil prepared using a patented, gentle
supercritical process to extract the oil to ensure its purity, potency and to retain all its benefits.

My skin type : Oily/ combination/ Dehydrated and prone to congestion and my chief concerns are hyperpigmentation and the sunspots along with the enlarged pores.

How I use it ? Whenever I start any new product , I use it alone in my night routine . The advantages of doing this are one -any immediate reaction like rashes can be tackled easily(I have learned my lesson when I presented myself at my workplace with a huge rash ;)) and another benefit is that the skin develops tolerance towards the product and its easy to single out the product if your skin disagrees to the product specially if you are using oils and active treatment products.

I now use it both day and night. Earlier I have used it as the last step in my routine but recently I have started using it as the first thing after cleansing and toning and I can see that the results are better. It layers well both ways . If you use a watery serum than I would suggest that you layer over it otherwise if you are using a creamy serum than it will work better if you use under it.I strongly suggest that you try with your routine to see which way it works better for you .

Results : I have used it for more than 2 months now . In the initial few weeks when I started this oil I was having an outbreak of hormonal acne. After using it on the first night I woke up with no acne 😉 I wish !! No, I don’t think any product can do that not at least the ones that I have tried but I saw a significant reduction in the inflammation and redness. It took 4-5 days for them to heal completely but they left very little scar. This can be attributed to the thoughtful inclusion of powerful anti inflammatory oils like chamomile (Roman and German), Lavender , carrot and sandalwood oil. I saw that it made my skin incredibly soft and hydrated. The skin looks brighter and for me it definitely helped in fading my old acne scars. The brightness is due  astaxanthin present in this oil which is 65 times stronger than vit c. The effects of taking astaxanthin are already known when taken internally but now I can see its benefits when applied topically. Anybody who doesn’t like traditional vitamin C serums or react with them then you can start with this oil. The oil also promises to help with wrinkles but I don’t have any, so I can’t comment on that. But my skin definitely looks plump and smooth on the nights I use this oil.

Pros-

  • lightweight and absorbs easily
  • makes skin brighter and even toned and gives a glow
  • speeds up the healing and helps with post acne hyperpigmentation.
  • plumps and hydrates the skin
  • layers well with other skincare products both in day and night routine
  • can be used well under the makeup
  • due to the supercritical patent process of extraction the shelf life is 2 years
  • no artificial fragrance

Cons-

  • none or at least I can’t find any .

Will I repurchase : Yes

Suitable for : all skin types

Do you need it ? Yes if you are in the market for a good antioxidant light weight oil or if you are new to the facial oils then you should definitely go for it.

Price : 85$ for 30 ml

I actually ended up purchasing this following your recommendation on Instagram and I love it! Love this review as it is incredibly thorough and to the point! It is a light oil as you mention and it does not stain the sheets, so often times when I don’t have a lot of time before bedtime, I reach for this particular oil over my beloved Luna Oil. I felt the price is a little steep and although I would eventually repurchase it, I wouldn’t do so right away as there are cheaper alternatives that work for me just as well (aka the Kiehls Midnight Recovery Serum). What I personally also appreciate about this product is that it’s natural in formulation, sans parabens and cruelty-free, all big items for me.
I am so excited to be reading your blog and can’t wait for your next post!

    1. I’m glad that you are liking it. I thought about the price as well and I always use to wonder why some oils are so expensive and why some are cheaper. It depends a lot on the sourcing of the oil , the extraction process whether it’s unrefined/ cold processed/ Co2 extracted. It changes the effectiveness of oil to a significant level. Just a tip about the usage – try layering Luna under the maya chia oil for few days and you will enjoy it even more. Thanks again for reading it!!
