Thirst quencher for your skin : B-Hydra™ Intensive Hydration Gel

The company : It’s a new product from The Drunk Elephant skin care brand founded by Tiffany Masterson . I love that the  brand provides a beautiful array of clinically effective and scientifically researched natural products and at the same time avoiding unnecessary ingredients. Their products contains the highest percentage of potent ingredients like 15% ascorbic acid in C- firma day serum  and the Framboos night serum with 12% aha blend which shows results. There are no fragrances natural or synthetic therefore avoiding any potential irritation for sensitive skin. I have a sensitive skin and I have struggled for the longest time to find a glycolic serum which can work for my skin without any itching, burning and rashes which I usually get with acid serums. That’s when I found this company and decided to give it a try and I’m hooked ever since.

B hydra intensive hydration Gel: The company launched this product somewhere in January and I immediately jumped on it. I love facial oils and my skin loves them too but no matter what oil or balms I try my skin gets dehydrated at the surface during winters or when the season changes. That’s when I read an article by Sarita Coren from @ediblefacial who I adore , where she discussed about TEWL ( here). Since I have an oily combination skin I don’t like to overload my skin with heavy serums and another layer of creams or moisturizer. I love light and water based serums under my oils and I feel they help in forming a microemulsion and better absorption of the products I layer them with. I wasn’t expecting much from it other than hydration but it exceeded my expectations.

Key Ingredients:

Pro-Vitamin B5: Humectant that attracts and holds moisture. Works to improve skin’s barrier function and maintain the proliferation of fibroblasts, cells that create collagen.

Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer: Delivers excellent moisturization through the slow delivery of water and acts as a free radical scavenger and powerful antioxidant.

Pineapple Ceramide: Provides skin lightening, anti-aging, moisturization, and visibly improved skin texture and tone.

Watermelon Rind/Apple/Lentil Complex: A natural complex combining watermelon rind, lentil fruit and apple extract that provides 24 hour skin hydration and significantly reduces fine lines, while increasing cell membrane fluidity and moisture retention.

Swertia Chirata Extract: A humectant extracted from the Indian Chiretta plant that improves skin regeneration and thickness.

Bearberry Extract: Moisturizing and soothing agent with antibacterial, antioxidant and skin-lightening properties.

Squalane: This natural moisturizing factor (NMF) has immune-stimulating properties and increases skin respiration, preventing water loss from the surface of the skin. It hydrates and soothes without an unpleasant, greasy feel.

Complete ingredients list : It’s not completely chemical free but I particulary have no problem with it as long as they are efffective.

Water (Aqua), Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Ananas Sativus (Pineapple) Fruit Extract,Arctostaphylos Uva Ursi (Bearberry) Leaf Extract, Citrullus Vulgaris (Watermelon) Fruit Extract, Lens Esculenta (Lentil) Fruit Extract, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Panthenol, Sodium PCA, Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer, Sodium Lactate, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Cyclodextrin, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate,Citric Acid, Pentylene Glycol, Chlorphenesin, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol

Claims : Hydration – Moisturisation – illumination

Texture : It’s a light weight gel which absorbs completely into the skin and you don’t even feel it’s there.

Fragrance : None

My skin type: oily /combination , sensitive and prone for dehydration in winter.

My experience :

  • Hydration- I usually don’t like gel texture but I’m pleasantly surprised by it.  It comes out as a gel and I use just one pump . It sinks in fast and leaves no sticky residue. I use it as a serum under the moisturizer/ oil I fancy during the day or over the  C firma day serum. It might be sufficient alone for very oily skin or if u are living in humid climate but for dry skin you will need a moisturizer over it. I have realized that I don’t get oily in my T zone anymore  and my skin remains hydrated throughout the day.
  • Brightening – I didn’t buy it for any brightening nor I was expecting anything from it despite its claims but I have  noticed that together with c firma day serum it has lightened some of my hyperpigmentation  marks over my jaw line and my skin feels smooth. It has some exfoliating ingredients like apple / lentil / watermelon complex and bearberry but I don’t think they are alone responsible for brightening . When skin is hydrated enough it automatically looks more even toned and bright and 15% ascorbic acid in C- firma serum which I use it with might have helped. But there were no overnight results and I have used it over 5 weeks and I have started noticing the brightening now. My skin easily gets congested mainly over my chin and T zone but with its continued usage it has improved in hydration , texture and looks more brightened with less breakouts. It gave me the better results than the other brightening cream I’m currently using. I like using it as the first layer after cleansing and toning and I feel my moisturizer and oils work much more better when I use it. I don’t use makeup but I sometimes use tinted moisturizer or sunscreen and I never had any problem of piling up which can happen with some gels. Overall my experience with this hydragel was very pleasant .

Will I repurchase it : Yes

Will I recommend it : Yes

Do You need it : If you are happy with the oils /creams or balms you are currently using and your skin is hydrated enough then you don’t need it , continue with your magic potions they are already doing a great job and you are not missing out on anything. But if you feel that you are using all the balms and oils and still your skin feels dull and dehydrated then you might enjoy this . This is a hydration booster and in no way it can replace your regular moisturizer.

Best for : All skin type.

Such a thorough review! You covered certain aspects that I didn’t even consider. I am happy with my oils/balms but I will try to get a sample from Sephora so that I don’t feel left out of the movement (I do see it everywhere and you do seem to like it). Thank you for such an honest review!

I have oily skin that I have not been able to get under control for the longest time save for a oil control sunscreen, so after reading your post, I look forward to adding this to my regimen and trying it out!
